MACUHO 2003!
Safe Harbors: Practical Tips on Student Staff Diversity Training
Thank you for attending my session at this year's MACUHO conference! You were such a great group and I hope you found our time together valuable and worthwile. Please feel free to contact me (info below) if you have any questions or want more information.
You can find all of the session materials below:
Slide Presentation - PDF format (2.61MB) - this will take a while to download over a phone, but less than a minute over the network
Slide Presentation - Power Point Show (2.32MB)- this will take a while to download over a phone, but less than a minute over the network
Session Handout - PDF format (180KB)
Play-doh Activity
Instructions-PDF format (100KB)
-You will need to divide the group into half. My suggestion is that you hand
pick the members of the unprivileged group and send them out of the room into
an uncomfortable location - such as on the floor. The privileged group can
simply stay in the primary training location. The attached pdf file contains
the instructions for each group -pick someone from each group to read and
explain the instructions. The goal is to have both groups believe they are
doing the same activity and have the same resources. Always allow the privileged
group to pick their play-doh first. In addition to play-doh, I use Chenille
Stems (aka pipecleaners) for this activity. I also offer lots of kindness
and encouragment to the privileged group and I give hints of discouragement
and and disregard to the unprivileged group.
After 15-20 minutes, I have both groups share their products, letting the "P" group go first and then the "Un-P" group go second. I then ask participants to share what they really thought the exercise was about. We then spend another 15-20 minutes debriefing the experience.
This is a great activity, but does require good facilitation skills - it's one of those "be careful if you should try this at home" activities.
