Debra Y. Griffith, Ed.D., has repeatedly demonstrated success in the areas of program development, practical application, supervision, leadership and implementation at diverse educational institutions. Her higher education professional background includes residence life and housing, student conduct, and student support services specifically for first-generation college students.
Dr. Griffith currently serves as the Associate Vice President for Transition and Retention at San Jose State University in San Jose, California. Prior to taking on this role she served as the Director of the Educational Opportunity Program.
Her expertise includes supervisory leadership, program assessment, analysis, program development, professional development, and coaching; her passion lies in helping people/programs move from imagining their goals to achieving them.
Dr. Griffith earned a doctorate in Business specializing in organizational leadership from Argosy University in San Francisco; a master’s degree in Education with an emphasis in Counseling and Student Personnel from San Jose State University, and a bachelors degree in Sociology from Long Island University, Brooklyn New York campus.
One of the key factors behind the success of most organizations is their determined efforts to invest in their personnel and provide them with a strong learning environment. This is in line with an old proverb that says, “If you want to be prosperous for a year, grow grain. If you want to be prosperous for ten years, grow trees. If you want to be prosperous for a lifetime, grow people.” Embracing the same principle, Dr. Debra Y. Griffith has exemplified genuine passion in developing individuals into high-functioning staff and teams to achieve their goals, while at the same time persevering to succeed in her own undertakings. She firmly believes that bringing the best out of people will transform them into highly motivated and solid contributors to the company for which they are working.
In addition to her educational accolades, Debra seized every opportunity that came her way to further expand her skill set. As a result, she has participated in numerous trainings as a learner, facilitated curriculum as a trainer, and attained certifications from The Art and Science of Coaching, the Social Justice Training Institute, the Judicial Training Institute, the Santa Clara County Mediation Training Institute, and the Franklin Covey 7 Habits Foundations Training.
With sincere interest in the field of people development, Debra launched her career at the Administration for Children’s Services as a child protective specialist in 1999. Shortly after, she assumed various positions such as Resident Director at Kean University and SJSU; Director of Student Conduct & Ethical Development; Director of Educational Opportunity Program; and Assistant Dean of Students for the Semester at Sea program at the University of Virginia. For more than a decade, Debra has demonstrated her capabilities in taking on various roles with weightier responsibilities, consequently becoming a well-trained, disciplined, and efficient professional.
